Backing up data to tape can be a complex, manual, error-prone process. There
are risks at every step, including configuring the software, backup rotation
errors, running the backup itself, labeling and cataloging tapes and moving the
tapes off-site, and maintaining all tapes in the sequence. Should data need to
be restored from tape, the tapes need to be located and the data stored on them
recovered in the reverse order. A recent study by Iron Mountain revealed that
nearly 50 percent of tape backups are misconfigured. And, the Gartner Group has
also reported that 40 percent of business data is not properly backed up each night.
